LIKES:
- Damon - She's been in love with him for a while. Her feelings for him have intensified, even though she's sired to him
- Writing - Though it’s mainly in her diary, Elena loves to write and dreamt of becoming a writer someday. Looks like though she will just be continuing to write in her diaries for the other centuries she will live.
- Dancing - She loves the school dances, she loves getting on that dance floor and shaking her moves… even if some of them are bad.

DISLIKES:
- Being a vampire – She didn’t ask to become one. She never wanted to become one. But she couldn’t let herself die and leave her brother with absolutely no one else left, she is a vampire to ensure Jeremy’s safety and hopes he lives a long, healthy, happy life.
- Everyone she loves dying because of her – Almost all of her friends, and literally all of her entire family have died, or nearly died, to save Elena’s life. And though she is eternally grateful for their loyalty, Elena can’t help but feel annoyed that they don’t think she can protect herself.
- Her Doppelganger, Katherine – Even though she helped Elena through her transition and is still teaching her the ropes in being a vampire, Elena knows that Katherine has an ulterior motive.
- Klaus and the rest of his family – if it wasn’t for the Original Hybrid and his crazy family Elena would still be human. She will never forgive Klaus for everything he has done to her, her family and her friends and hopes he’s suffering wherever he is rotting in hell.
- Being told what to do – The worst thing you could say to Elena is an order. She will just do the exact opposite to what she is told every single time.
STRENGTHS:
- The normal vampire strengths – Super sight, hearing, smell, compulsion etc.
- Her Humanity – Though she is a newly turned vampire Elena is still pretty much her old self (except what she eats now), with a lot of help from Caroline. Elena is still as caring, compassionate, feisty and headstrong as she was when she was human.
- Pissing Damon off – Not a real strength but it happens so much it should be!
- Fearlessness – Even before she was turned Elena was always risking her life for her loved ones, and even died a few times in the process.
WEAKNESSES:

- Stefan – No matter how many times he can hurt her or unintentionally put her in danger, Elena always seems to go back to him. He is her first love and she will always have a weakness for him in her heart.
[/li][li]Damon – Even though she is deeply in love with Stefan, Damon has also found a place inside her heart that she just can’t get rid of. There’s a connection between them that she can’t understand… or doesn’t want to understand.
[/li][li]Her vampire age – She is still a “baby” in the vampire world she is vulnerable around older vampires, she could easily be taken down by even Caroline who barely has a year over her. Being new also means she has very little control over her bloodlust or her temper so sometimes, in a fit of anger, Elena has been known to break a few tables.[/size]

Human
As a human, she was the sociable, popular girl in school who was the girl next door. She’s compassionate, caring, empathetic, kind, smart, beautiful, friendly and easy to get along with. Elena is also athletic and was a cheerleader on the cheerleading squad. Elena's favourite hobby was writing in her journal. Elena has said that she had always wanted to be a writer. Elena's problems were your typical, everyday life quirks befitting of a teenager. There's also stubbornness and a fiery aspect to her personality underneath the everyday quiet and caring exterior. Elena is fiercely loyal and very protective. She will fight for those she loves most and she will fight for what she believes to be right and just. She won't think twice about telling it like it is, even if the truth isn't necessarily pleasant. As Caroline once aptly put it, Elena's a mothering type who is highly protective and nurturing.
Vampire
As a vampire, it is assumed that Elena will be a "good" or moral vampire, Vampire Elena is similar to Stefan Salvatore, Caroline Forbes, Elijah Mikaelson or Lexi Branson. Elena's personality is heightened due to her immortality. Since waking up from drowning in Matt's four wheel drive truck in the same lake that her parents died in, she successfully transitioned into a vampire. She stopped Damon from killing Matt, to seek revenge (due to Damon didn't want Elena to be like him). Elena remembered all of the things that Damon had compelled her to forget. She’s warm, compassionate, caring, empathetic, kind, protective, smart, friendly and easy to get along with; all of her basic personality traits have been heightened and magnified due to her vampirism. In terms of her personality, Elena is the opposite of Katherine. Whereas Katherine wanted vampirism, Elena never wanted vampirism and wanted to stay human. Like Stefan, Elena was turned into a vampire against her will and by accident. She has also become much stronger physically due to her standard vampire abilities. Stefan had recalled that as Elena's Achilles heel as she settles into her transition as being a vampire, she has to go through "vampire puberty" as they call it. In terms of blood consumption, Elena seems to want prefer an animal blood diet (like Stefan) over drinking human blood bags (like Caroline) or feeding directly from humans (like Damon). Elena's vampire personality has just begun to be revealed, therefore, there is still more to learn about Elena's vampire personality and more to be revealed later in the series. Damon, who is a reckless, spirited, wild, vampire without a care in the world is going to be a very alluring (but dangerous) influence for the reckless, impulsive side of newborn vampire Elena, and there will be not one but several moments in the first few episodes that will have Elena walking a little bit too close to the fire in regards to feeding and her blood lust. As she spends more time with Damon, she will be leaning more towards his way of feeding, much to Stefan's and everyone else's strong disapproval. Elena is still going to grapple with her choice, though. Now that Elena is a vampire, her feelings are magnified, including her feelings for Damon, and they're much harder for her to ignore and push aside. She's hungry, she's anxious, she's unpredictable, she's confused, she's angry, she's changing. As she's learning to live as a vampire, she'll find that she has more in common with Damon than she does with Stefan, and that scares her, but it also makes things more exciting and opens her eyes a bit and let's her see that Damon isn't that bad after all.[/size]

HISTORY:
Elena Gilbert was born to John Gilbert and Isobel Flemming, who fled after giving birth. Grayson and Miranda Gilbert, John's older brother and sister-in-law, adopted the baby; The Gilberts were trying so hard to have a baby but it wasn't happening, so everything fell into place perfectly. Elena never knew she was adopted until recently and so she grew up the happiest little girl in the world, even when her baby brother was born Elena was still a happy child: ne jealousy, no acting out like most babies, in fact she was protective of Jeremy from the start. Throughout childhood and into her teens Elena was still the happy little girl: she had lots of friends, a boyfriend, was an honour student and was a cheerleader. Her life was perfect.
Though she was happy and content for a while, Elena realized she was not into the relationship she and Matt had anymore, the only love she felt towards him was as a friend. One night at a party, when Matt went on one of his future plan talks, Elena had had enough and they got into an argument where, afterwards, she called her parents to pick her up. There she met Damon who confused her with a girl named Katherine. Damon compelled her to forget him, but also to have adventure and fun in her life before disappearing. Elena's parents turned up and she didn't remember her meeting with Damon until very recently.
That same night, as they drove home from picking Elena up, the Gilberts' car unexpectedly crashed into the river under Wickery Bridge . It was later revealed, that Stefan arrived at the accident scene after hearing the unexpected and tragic event and he saved Elena's life after her father, Grayson, begged him to take care of her first before helping him and Elena's adoptive mother. Fortunately, Elena survived the accident, but unfortunately, her adoptive parents died. Elena didn’t know until she started dating Stefan that he was the one that saved her that night.
Elena and her younger brother Jeremy were being raised by their Aunt Jenna after their parents died in a car accident. After the death of her parents, she broke up with her childhood best friend and boyfriend, Matt. After the tragedy of losing both of her parents, Elena decided to make an attempt to start over and learn how to cope with the tragic loss and start to regain some of her happiness again.
When the school year started, Elena met Stefan Salvatore and was immediately and undeniably drawn, intrigued and attracted to him. Meeting Stefan immediately brought things back to normal for Elena again. The more they hung out the more Elena fell for Stefan but she knew that he was hiding something from her. When he told her though it wasn’t what she was expecting. When she pieced everything together and had Stefan confirm that he and Damon were vampires, Elena was hostile towards both of them at first (Who wouldn’t be?!), until they gained her trust again.
Elena was a witness of Lexi's, Stefan’s best friend who helped him become the vampire he was, death at the hands of Damon and of the destruction of Bonnie's talisman in order to prevent Damon from freeing the vampires underneath the tomb, after which she told Bonnie the truth about everything. Elena also got into a car accident when swerving to miss a vampire after spending the night with Stefan, subsequently discovering the photo of Katherine, who looked exactly like herself. The vampire she almost crashed into almost attacked her, but Damon appeared just in time to save her life. When she confronted Stefan about the photo and Katherine that’s when she learnt that she was a Doppelganger and Katherine was in fact an ancestor of hers, it was also that same night that she learnt that she was adopted and later that her uncle Jon was in fact her father and her mother was the assumed-dead wife of her aunts new boyfriend.
After the tomb was opened, and the vampires were released, quite happy that Katherine wasn’t among them, she helped Damon save Stefan from Frederick and the other vampires who were torturing him. When Frederick stabbed him, Elena gave Stefan her blood so he would survive. This was a bad decision it seemed. Stefan became addicted to human blood, since he never learned how to control his cravings, and started drinking human blood that he stole from a blood bank behind Elena's back. When Damon told her what he'd been doing, they locked Stefan in the basement to try to get him back to normal. Eventually Stefan was able to get back his control and he and Elena agreed to help him build up immunity towards blood, something that would help him with his cravings, and so Elena would give him a few drops of blood every day until he didn’t feel the bloodlust anymore.
The night her real father was almost killed by Katherine was the same night Caroline was in a car crash and her brother took pills with vampire blood and so was a stressful night. When she arrived at the hospital and went to see Caroline, Bonnie and Damon were in an argument on whether or not he should give Caroline blood so she would live. Both Elena and Damon were against the idea but Bonnie was stubborn so he did it in the end. He also told Elena that they kissed, which she denied, and later realised it was in fact Katherine he kissed.
Katherine had started to cause a hell of a lot of trouble now she was in Mystic Falls, from pretending to be Elena to her friends, for killing her friends and making them vampires, to kissing her boyfriend’s brother and causing tension between she and Damon. Damon was now admitting to Elena that he felt something for her and that she did too. It wasn’t a lie, she did care for him, but her first love would always be Stefan. Damon didn’t take that news well and killed her brother (luckily he was wearing the ring that can bring him back from supernatural deaths). She hated him. She never wanted to see him after that. But Damon had a way of getting under her skin and she could never shake him.
When Elena learnt that she was “The Doppelganger”, she learnt of a curse and that she was the key to breaking the curse. Klaus, one of the Original vampires, was also half werewolf but the curse stopped him from accessing his wolf side and it was Elena that was the key. If she died, Klaus could become half vampire, half werewolf… A Hybrid. Everyone was trying to find ways to keep Elena alive. Elena thought she found her answer. Elijah, Klaus’ brother, who was on their side to stop Klaus, knew of an elixir that would bring her back to life after the sacrifice. Elena was willing to take the chance. Stefan trusted her instincts. Damon didn’t. He decided that the only way he knew how to save Elena was with his blood and forced her to drink from him. This would mean that Elena would come back from the dead after the sacrifice but she would be a vampire. This caused Elena to break down, and confess to Stefan that she didn’t want to be a vampire; she wanted to grow up, go to college, have kids, and get married. She didn’t want to live forever as a teenager no matter how much she loves Stefan. In the end she sacrificed herself to save her family… her aunt was turned into a vampire for the ritual and killed in front of her so there was only Jeremy left to protect. What Elena didn’t know was that Bonnie, Damon, Alaric, Jeremy and Jonathan were doing a spell that would bring her back if another life took her place. Jonathan Gilbert took her place and died when Elena was revived.
Before the funeral of her father and Jenna, Jeremy gave her a letter from John and his ring. In the letter, he told her that “it is hard to be an ordinary father to an extraordinary daughter” and that he had failed her because of his prejudices. He continued to tell her that he gave his life so that she could remain human and make the choices she wanted to make about having a child and all the choices a human could make. He explains that he gave her his ring because he wanted her to give it to her child if she ever had one and that she would therefore succeed where he had failed. Elena was filled with regret that she never let Jon into her life and let him try to be a good father to her.
A few days after the funeral Stefan told Elena that Damon was dying from a werewolf bite. Elena had witnessed this before and knew it was fatal and there was no hope. She was forced to confront her feelings for him pretty quickly. Was she ready to lose him forever? As he was dying, Damon confessed his feelings to her and tells Elena he wishes she could have met him in 1864, because she would have liked him. Elena answered that she liked him as he was and kisses him. Looking sad and sorrowful because he's dying. Suddenly Katherine appeared with the cure and told her that Stefan traded himself for it and they will likely never see him again.
Stefan had been gone almost a whole summer. And Elena and Damon grew even closer. The feelings she felt with Stefan she was starting to feel with Damon. She saw a different side that he didn’t let anybody else see, the side she favoured. Elena never stopped looking for Stefan though and often had Damon go to places she thought he may be only to find out they were too late and he was gone with Klaus. Damon took Elena to Chicago to find Stefan and when she tried to get him to come home he broke her heart by saying he never wanted to see her again. But she wouldn’t give up on him.
When Stefan returned he wasn’t alone. Klaus and his sister Rebekah (Who hates Elena with a passion because she has Stefan’s heart now) came back with him and found out why Klaus couldn’t make any Hybrids. Because Elena was still alive but then he found out it was her blood he needs for them to become hybrids. Klaus compelled Stefan to lose his feelings for Elena and he became cold and heartless just like Klaus. After Stefan attacked Elena Klaus took her to the hospital where he began to drain as much blood from her as possible but Damon was quick to rescue her and bring her home.
Elena realised she needed to learn how to fight if she was going to fight back and so started training with Alaric and also Damon, though she tried not to train with Damon too much as she found it too… hot. The first time using her new fighting skills was on Stefan. To prove she wasn’t pathetic like he was saying she was. The more Stefan was cold to her the more Elena ran to Damon and the more her heart grew for him. Though she knew Stefan was only being this way because he was compelled to. In the space of a few weeks Elena learnt so much, from the origins of the Originals and how they became who they are, to Alaric’s psychotic psyche, to the Originals Mother coming back and trying to undo the spell she did many years ago but failing. Elena and Damon shared a few kisses. Then Esther, the original mother, turned Alaric into a vampire vampire-hunter and tying his life with Elena (if she dies he dies). When Klaus hears of the news he want’s gone… but not without his Doppelganger and kidnaps her and tries to take all her blood from her. But luckily Tyler was there to stop him but Elena was severely injured during the assault on Klaus. She later learned that they succeeded in desiccating Klaus and he was packed up and on the way somewhere nobody would find him.
While they were getting rid of Klaus Elena fainted and woke in hospital, she was told it was just a concussion but later learnt it was serious but was treated with vampire blood. Stefan came back to care for her. This was when she made her decision. She loved Stefan, she told Damon that and also that Stefan was there for her when she needed him and if she had met Damon first maybe things would be different. It was on her way back to Mystic Falls (Matt and Jeremy were attempting to take her away so no harm could come of her) that Rebekah appeared from nowhere and ran her and Matt off the road. Elena was drowning in the same river her parents drowned in. She tried to escape like the last time but she knew there was no way out. Stefan appeared but she forced him to save Matt then her. Stefan was too late coming back for her and was dead when he returned. It was only an hour or so later that she woke on the table in the morgue, with Stefan crying beside her. All her memories came flooding back, her entire childhood, school years, the last year or so… and the ones she was compelled to forget.
So now Elena is a vampire. She refuses to see Stefan and Damon. She blames them for everything that has happened, her life was normal until they arrived. And she is avoiding Damon because he will know that she remembers everything he compelled her to forget. She is currently at her own home where her brother, Caroline and strangely Katherine are all helping her through the transition and teach her control.
